Bird race in the Oder Valley
114 species discovered in 24 hours (09.05.2011)
For the second time, in coöperation with the Association of Friends of the German-Polish European National Park Unteres Odertal e. V. a “Birdrace” also takes place in the Lower Oder Valley, in which a group of ornithologists must discover and name as many bird species as possible within 24 hours.
Last Saturday (May 7th, 2011) four Berliners successfully went “bird hunting” in the Lower Oder Valley. As part of a nationwide observation competition, Martin Malkmus, Tobias Schäfer, Andreas Wirsing and Severin Zillich recorded all bird species from midnight until late in the evening that they could discover on a route from Felchowsee via Criewen and Schwedt north to the Teerofen Bridge. In the end, 114 species were on her list, including rarities such as the spotted moorhen and the little moorhen, both species are threatened with extinction in Germany, as well as the bittern, bittern and black stork. The bird connoisseurs had a lot of fun with the campaign.
The bird race in the Oder Valley served two good purposes. The aim was to promote the protection of the only German floodplain national park and, with the support of the GmbH des BUND e. V. (Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation Germany) to collect donations for the construction of the internet portal ornitho.de, which is supposed to serve the protection of birds.
